Journalist, writer and socialist theorist. He did not take part in the Commune, being arrested on 17 March by the Thiers government. Many Communards adhered to his theories (Ferré, Eudes, Mortier, Rigault, etc.). Nicknamed "Le vieux" or "L'enfermé" (43 years and 2 months in prison and under house arrest!), he was released in 1879 and fought for an amnesty. He fought for amnesty and founded the newspaper "Ni dieu, ni maître" ("Neither God nor Master"). 100,000 people attended his funeral. The recumbent statue was created around 1900 by the sculptor Jules Dalou.
