Gustave Flourens

Access: take Avenue d'Ornano, towards the middle, on your left, you will find the tomb of Flourens (Div 66) in the front row.

Professor at the Collège de France, where he taught natural history, he was later dismissed for his ideas. In 1866, he took part in the Cretan uprising. In 1868, on his return to France, he became a journalist with the "Marseillaise" in Rochefort. During the siege, he was battalion in Belleville. During the Commune, he was elected to the 19th and 20th arrondissements and sat on the military commission. On 3 April 1871, during an offensive, he was murdered by the gendarme Desmarets in Chatou. A corps of francs-tireurs was named after him: "Les vengeurs de Flourens" (The Avengers of Flourens).
