Socialist politician. He fought in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870. He supported the Commune and in particular Eugène Pottier at the Ministry of Justice. After the Bloody Week he went into exile in England. He returned to France after the amnesty. He took part in various political battles, particularly against Boulangisme.
